Ebay’s competitor in Central Europe, “Allegro” sold for 3.5 bln USD

Cinven Ltd, Permira and Mid Europa Partners have agreed to buy the online auction site Allegro for USD 3.253 billion. Allegro originally started in Poland however like most of Central European companies had been bought out and it is the South African company which is making the sale. Allegro is popular in Czech/Slovakia where it is known under the name “Aukro” and in Hungary where it operates as “Vatera”.  It also tried expanding to CIS market as “molotok.ru” in Russia and “Aukro.ua” in Ukraine however ultimately failed.

Ebay failed in Central Europe probably because of distrust among users with Allegro being seen as more secure.
